Daily Draw: Tree, Memento Mori, and The Fountain

Today, we flow. No matter where we are or what we’re going through, we flow. Keep moving. You are rooted in a deep and sacred lineage, and the best way to honor and work with it is to acknowledge it. Give honor and respect to your dead, but also to the dying year. Take a minute and look back at what you’ve been through, what you’ve accomplished, and what you’ve failed at as well. Don’t judge or be mean to yourself (or anyone else). Just observe your successes and failures, and see with compassion the successes and failures of your ancestors and family. We all do the best we can with what we’ve got, and while some of us seem to have ancestors who were assholes, it’s still of most advantage to us now to offer them compassion as much as we can, if for no other reason than to free ourselves of the family curses so that we can move on. Because that’s where this reading is going: we have great creativity available to us, and the sorrow and pain of our lineages creates a richness of human experience from which we can draw in creative, healing ways. The Wheel turns, driven by the flow of life: day into night into day, life and death and life, over and over and over again. See the flow with compassion for all of us who are in it. Take a larger, longer view, and give yourself and everyone you touch the gift of forgiveness.

Daily Draw: Eight of Swords (Geirrod & Loki) and Strength (Nidhogg)

Today’s draw is about being stuck, but knowing how to get out of it … you just don’t want to do it. It’s an ugly situation all around, and you’ll have to break a few things to make good your escape, but you can fix those later. You’re strong enough to manage it, so keep your eyes on the prize and move forward. Use your words, your voice, and speak your truth from the heart. Keep moving, and do the best you can. Do the hard thing, and do it well. You’re going to keep getting goaded at until you do it anyway, so might as well do it and get it over with.

Daily Draw: Compass Rose, Four of Swords (The Volva), Strength rev. (Nidhogg)

Ok, here’s the thing: you’re on the right path. You’re doing well. You’ve headed out onto the new road, and you’re making your way. This is all good. Now is the time to take a break for a second and check the map. Do some meditation and journeywork to unlock new abilities and information that you need going forward. Don’t get boxed in by others’ ideas about what you should be doing, or throw away (or otherwise waste) your energy on things that don’t matter. Flow forward — you are on a roll of inexorable forward energy, so ride it as far as you can and just hang on.

Daily Draw: Gargoyle, The Golden Age (Wholeness), Thor (Strength)

Today’s draw is a reminder that we are protected by unseen forces, and that it’s important to release worry and stress because we can be our own worst enemy if we let our tension and anxiety run the floor. Stay strong, and keep moving. Goodness is ours, and we’ve reached the end of whatever stressful situation we were in previously. Also your ancestors have heard your prayers and are working to bring about the transformation you’ve requested. Everything is in a cycle of sowing and reaping, using and recycling, death and rebirth, energy and rest—everything, including us.

Daily Draw: Thistle, Iduna (Renewal), Sif (Harvest)

Today is a good day to take pride in the good you’ve done, to take stock in a good way of all the blessings you’ve won (for lack of a better word). You have been given much, and you deserve much. But remember that everything you’ve been given you merely hold in guardianship for others; you are a protector more than an owner of things. Share what you’ve learned. Give back. Don’t grasp at what you can’t keep anyway. And be careful of using your power and strength in negative ways. Don’t get drawn into family quarrels. Watch out for what you promise when you’re not sober. And for the love of all that’s holy, don’t be a bully. Don’t be a Mean Girl. Give praise and honor where it’s due, and don’t take credit for what you haven’t done.

Daily Draw: The Owl, The Sun (rev), and Strength (rev)

So maybe today is not the day to declare your run for the Presidency of the United States. Maybe today is a day to keep your friends close and kick your enemies to the curb because frankly, who needs ’em? Shield and protect yourselves, and pay attention to your own needs as you move through the day. Listen to your body. Pay attention to little signs and signals. And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Daily Draw: 8 of Cups, Unn

Today’s draw is about having the guts to cut away and leave behind what is no longer good for you. This is not a happy-making draw, which is a bummer, but there you go. You’re dragging around your dead and you need to bury them and move on. And it’s not just you: there is a family history of doing what you’re doing, thinking you can fix it or change it or somehow make some good come out of it, or maybe you’ve been taught to think that it’s your place, your purpose in life to carry everybody else’s burdens and sorrows. What pained your mother must also pain you. What terrified your father must also terrify you. Fuck that. End it. You don’t need to be burdened by what burdened your ancestors. They had their own battles and you have yours. You may fight them in the same ways, but you can learn from their mistakes. In fact I’m pretty sure that in most cases they’d WANT you to learn from their mistakes. Let the Divine Breath blow through you and rattle away what’s dead like the north wind through the remaining leaves on a tree in late autumn. Cut it from you when you hear the rattling, and let it go with both hands. Walk forward. Move on. It’s time.
