Daily Draw: Echo and The Raven

Today’s draw is a rather potent reminder that while soliciting input and advice is usually a pretty good idea, at least to see how others do things or to get help with brainstorming or inspiration, it’s critical to not forget that you’re actually a pretty smart cookie on your own. Don’t fall into the trap of spending all your time gathering data instead of actually doing the thing you want to do in the first place. Trust yourself, darlings. You’re much smarter than you think you are, and you’ve got a solid foundation for your plans and ideas. You just need to do the groundwork, the planning, the managing of The Thing (whatever it is). And yes, you can do it. Yes, you can. Stop arguing with me. You are more than enough to do exactly what you need to do, so go for it.

Daily Draw: Nazar, Hel (Death), and Wala (Prophecy)

Ok, yeah. Deep breath here. Talk to the dead, reach out to your ancestors for blessings and gather them up. You are protected by great good fortune, and you need to face those demons. Stand in courage and the strength of what you’ve learned so far, go into the places where your shadows live, and talk to them. You may not get the answers you want, but that’s no reason to be afraid. In fact, being afraid is absolutely the worst thing you could do. Let yourself feel how protected you are from both above and below, and face the dark with courage. Now is an important time to gather lessons from the dying year, to harvest what we’ve sown and to sift through what’s there worth keeping and what needs to go. Get moving.

Daily Draw: Blackbird, The Hierophant, and The Emperor

Ok, so, wow. The theme of today’s draw is grief, heartbreak, and disappointment, what’s yours and what comes from outside you, the pain and suffering that comes along in life whether you’re ready for it or not. It’s unavoidable because it’s life. What matters here is how you deal with it. There is no escaping it, so don’t even try. The thing to do is look at how you’re looking at it: do you see change and upheaval as negative, as something “the gods” are doing to you because they hate you? (Hint: They don’t. Why would They?) Today’s draw is about how to work with this energy as it appears in your life, to make positive change happen or at least to find ways to work with grief and despair so that you can learn from it and hopefully be better prepared the next time it comes around. When you experience inner turmoil, look for the source of it, not the symptoms. What’s the cause? On Sunday evening I did some journeywork to talk to my demons directly about my food addictions, and what I came away with after that conversation was that I eat and overeat because I’m desperately unhappy right now in my life and I need to do more to actively find happiness. I can’t just sit and wallow in despair. That’s not helpful to anybody, least of all me. So if you are experiencing inner pain, look at the root of it: don’t beat yourself up for having the addiction. What’s the addiction masking? And if you’re dealing with pain from outside, get away from it. Cut it off. Don’t drown your sorrows, and don’t accept misery that isn’t yours. Be fierce in establishing and holding boundaries, and be the absolute monarch of your domain. You are the ruler of the kingdom of you. You hold the keys to your castle. Start acting like it.

Daily Draw: XII The Hanged Man (rev), Mimir

Are you protected as you go about your day? Do you put shields up, even against your own worst tendencies? You need to today. Tricksters are about, and you need to just keep plugging away. Now is not a good day for reflection or contemplation; it’s a day to just get stuff done. Hang on, take note of the signs as you go, but keep going. Don’t stop–not today, anyway. Just keep moving. Talk about it if you can, and cut away anything that is dragging you down. And don’t waste time worrying about the particulars of alchemy (e.g., “Will doing X bring about Y?” “If I mix A with B, will the resulting C be bad karma?”). Just do it (or don’t), and move on.

Daily Draw: Ace of Swords (Kari)

Ok, so, here’s the thing: you’ve come through some rough stuff. We know this. A hard journey is either behind you or coming to a close. You may be so bathed in relief to have gotten through it that you want to rush ahead blindly so you can put it all far, far behind you. Well, slow your roll, Grasshopper. Resist that impulse. Now is the time to take what you’ve learned and implement it in solid, real-world ways. Take the lessons of the initiation and ground them in the practical, material world. You are embarking on a new path, and new doors are opening up for you. Have you ever had that nightmare where you’re in a transit hub of some sort (airport, train station, subway, whatever) and you’re rushing to catch a train/plane and you make it! Whew!! And as the train leaves the station or the plane takes off, you realize you’ve forgotten your luggage? Yeah, don’t be That Guy. These things you’ve been working on are too important to get left behind as you run for the door. Slow down, make sure you’ve got everything in order and in hand, and then proceed. Make notes of all inspirations, be careful to balance your activities to engage in both inner and outer work, and recognize your humanity through it all (hint: “humanity” = “human” = “not perfect”).

Card of the Day: Temperance (Reversed)

Good morning, friends! Today’s card of the day is Temperance Reversed. Things are out of balance, out of whack. This isn’t a surprise given that Mercury is doing it’s whackadoodle dance in the sky right now, so things are getting confused, mixed up, messed up, or treated in ways that are outside the norm. I’m not one of those who believes that Mercury Retrograde is always bad, nor do I believe that just because the planet is moving around up there in a way that appears backwards to us does it follow that things will be backwards for us down here. Mercury only appears to move backwards when it’s in Retrograde because of our relative planetary positions. It doesn’t actually move backwards. That’s the illusion, and perhaps the message to take from reversed Temperance: take a good look at things in your life right now and don’t focus on the mixing. Focus instead on the separate ingredients. Look at things to see if you can see what they really are independent of outside influences. Something is not working properly. Something is out of balance. Look again at your recipe and make sure you’re not overlooking something. Step outside your normal way of doing things and take a different (perhaps backwards) view to see what you might be missing.

This is the Temperance card (reversed), both from the Rider Waite Smith deck and from my own Pinterest-based pop culture Tarot:
