Welcome back, darlings! Today’s draw is an admonition to move on despite whatever else you might be going through. Put up your shields and boundaries and grieve where you need to, but don’t be afraid to let go and move on. Give yourself time to process whatever is coming up, and try to do so creatively: write, draw, paint, sculpt, knit, build, or even destroy if that’s what you need to do. Allow it all to flow out so that you aren’t carrying it around with you. It’s baggage that needs to go. And also don’t worry about keeping others on the “outside” side of the fence: they can sit out there and wait until it’s their turn to be admitted into The Presence.
There’s so much to be wary of here, my friends, but the bottom line is this: you are on a path of leadership and learning, but you’re not there yet. Don’t be all acting like you’re the King when in fact you’re still the Prince. Don’t get into debt against future earnings that you haven’t earned yet (in other words, watch it with the credit cards), and be studious and careful about where you’re headed. Learn what it takes to be a leader. Being a King (or Queen, of course) is much, much more than just wearing a crown. You take on the responsibility for the health of the land and all beings supported on the land when you accept the crown of rulership. Learn about that land. Learn about the people. Learn about the beings who can’t speak for themselves, at least in human tongues (the animals, the plants and trees, the insects, the waters and everything that lives in them, the birds). Wherever you’re headed, do your homework and make yourself worthy of the lands and people you would rule. You’re on the path and moving, and there’s no stopping it now. The flow is inexorable. So be ready for when you get there.
Today’s draw is all about doing the work and getting it done. It’s easy when you’ve been working hard to see only the work, to think it will never end, to think maybe you’re stuck in a certain way of doing things and that’s just how it is. It’s also easy to think that the world is balanced on a good-versus-evil axis, and if something bad happens to you, you must have done something wrong, or maybe somebody’s out to get you, or somehow the gods hate you. But no, They don’t, and it’s not a good use of your brain power to waste time thinking They do, or that somehow They’ve got it in for you, or whatever other processes happen when we go through a run of bad luck. The truth according to this draw is that if you focus too hard on the details, you will lose sight not only of the bigger picture, but also of ways to help and protect yourself that you really need right now. Working hard on this plane translates into working hard on That plane, the Spiritual plane, and doing good for yourself and others Over There translates into doing good for yourself and others on this plane. Divine Justice is not the same as human justice, so don’t expect it to be. Sometimes sacrifices aren’t rewarded on this plane or That one, at least not in the way we’d like them to be, and you have to just let them be “Learning Experiences” in the process of getting the work done. Keep those boundaries up, keep one eye on the skies, and git ‘er done.
So, fire. Yeah. In California there are fires burning all over the place, and there’s a blog post by Mark Morford on SFGate.com about climate change and everything being on fire that came across my Facebook feed this morning that resonates with today’s reading on a macro level. But this is about the cleansing fires that happen on a micro level. What needs to go in your life? What needs to get burned away? It’s time. If we won’t or can’t let go of it it will get taken from us, and all wisdom says that having things taken is a much more traumatic process than willingly letting go–although sometimes letting go is impossible, or seemingly so. Either way, willingly or unwillingly, change is at hand, and it will eventually be apparent as change for the better. There is healing happening now, medicine that we must take, and there is no knowing how or why that medicine will work. This is a faith healing, people, and we have to go through it in order to be reborn.
Trouble and strife are a part of life, a part of the Great Wheel, which is always turning. There are times to fight, times to put all your tremendous strength to the test, and there are times to realize that you are flat on your back and vulnerable to the forces of the world. You’ve gotten your ass kicked. Acknowledge it. Just let that be true. Be in that moment if it’s true for you. There is wisdom to be gleaned from it, and you can’t find that wisdom by fighting. Let go of ideas and plans that aren’t coming to fruition right now. There may be better, more fortuitous times for them in the future, so put them on the back burner and bring forward other things that need your attention more. There is death in rebirth, and rebirth in death. Now is a moment for facing those endings and acknowledging the humanity inherent in them. There will come a moment for rising again. But as those of you with Christian roots will know, Christ was dead for three days before his resurrection. He didn’t go immediately from being dead to being arisen. And the Ogham stave there on the left of the photo is the Elder tree and it represents the thirteenth “month” of the year, the last three days of the dying year that end at midnight on Samhain. You are in that period of three-day holding, of stasis and death, of the God-Who-Has-Died and is in the Kingdom of the Dead before being reborn into new life. Look around and take what wisdom you can from it with you when you arise.
Today’s draw is showing all things on their heads. Or maybe everything else is fine and you’re the one on your head. You’re certainly getting a lot of blood to your head in this upside-down asana you’re doing, so yay on that, but really, can you get around in life in the most efficient way like this? Seriously, there are easier ways. It’s not supposed to be like this; not really. But the only one who can get it all back on track is you, because you’re the one who got it all off track in the first place. (And when I say “all,” I’m only talking about the events and choices that were and are within your power to make, and that in the past you made out of fear or some other negative emotion rather than out of a desire to live your best possible life. I’m not talking about the crazy Mideast peace process being out of whack and all your fault.) To get yourself back on track, the first thing you need to do is decide to get it back on track, and to start today. Then start setting up boundaries and shielding against that which is not in your best interests, and go from there. Heal, nurture, and keep everything else away from you.
Today’s draw is about making choices that are necessary but not ideal. You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do, for whatever reason (love, money, survival), so do it. Learn from it and grow where you can, and accept the consequences when they come and remember why you made these decisions in the first place. Know that all things move in cycles of life and death and the great Wheel is always turning, so what’s happening now will not be how it is for you for the rest of your life (or lives, if you’re taking the long view 😉 ). Things will change according to their time and season, but you are where you are right now and you have to do what you have to do to get by. It’s possible that this is a form of initiation–I know quite a few Tarot readers who see the Eight of Swords as a card of initiation, and I’m one of them so it makes sense to me to see passage with this card (and the charms and runes seem to support this as well). Do your best–make your choices and keep moving. Just remember: when the results and consequences of your choices come due, be a grownup about it and take responsibility for them. Forgive where you can, especially yourself. We all do the best we can in the moment.
